INTERNATIONAL AWARD IN MEMORY OF PROFESSOR P.C.
MAHALANOBIS.
Recognising the contributions of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in
the field of statistics, it was decided by the Indian Government to institute an
International Award in the memory of Prof. Mahalanobis for the life time contribution of selected statistician from the developing country
(as defined by UN) who has earned their reputation in a developing country. This will have
the potential to attract, inspire and motivate statisticians across the developing world
to increase the quantity and improve the quality of their contributions to the cause of
promotion and development of statistical theory and its applications in real life
situations. Accordingly, Ministry of
Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOS&PI) and International Statistical
Institute (ISI), Voorburg, Netherlands have signed a memorandum of understanding(MOU) for
institution, management and administration of International Award in memory of Prof. P.C.
Mahalanobis for development of Statistics and promotion of best statistical practices.
The award carries a cash prize of
about US$5,000. Expenditure on travel
to the venue of the Award presentation
ceremony, registration, boarding and lodging
would also be provided to the awardee for participating in the award presentation
ceremony.
PERIOD OF THE AWARD
Biennial.
The First Award will be given in the ISI Session of
2003 followed by next award in the year 2005 .

IMPLEMENTING AUTHORITIES
The nodal
authorities are in Netherlands, the International Statistical Institute (ISI), Voorburg,
Netherlands and in India, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation(MOS&PI), Government of India. Reconstituted Mahalanobis Committee on
International Award in Statistics (MCIAS) will supervise all aspects of the Award and will
function as a Jury for the Mahalanobis International Award. The Selection of the Awardee
from the developing countries will be decided by the Jury and the decision of the jury
shall be final.
PROCEDURE FOR NOMINATION
Candidates
can nominate themselves for the award, accompanied by a support of two referees. Their names can also be proposed
by their institution or National Statistical Office, or the Jury can identify candidates. For the international award to be
given in the year 2005 ISI would invite nominations towards the end of the year 2004 or early 2005.
