NATIONAL AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING AND MERITORIOUS RESEARCH WORK IN STATISTICS IN MEMORY OF PROF. P.V. SUKHATME

 

            Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOS & PI) is implementing a Plan Scheme entitled “Awards and Fellowships for Outstanding and Meritorious Research Work in Statistics”.  The main objective of this plan scheme is

 

·         to encourage independent and high quality research work in the field of Applied/Official Statistics particularly on issues and problems relating to the Statistical System in the country.

 

Under the scheme, there are five components including the one viz. 'National Awards for Outstanding and Meritorious Research Work in Statistics'. Under this component, the MOS & PI has instituted two National Awards,

 

·         one in the memory of Prof. P.V. Sukhatme and

·         other in honour of Prof. C.R. Rao, the renowned statistician in the country. 

 

Both the Awards carry an amount of Rs. One lakh each along with citation.  These awards are given in the alternate years.  The P.V. Sukhatme award is given to the senior Indian statisticians for their life time contribution to the development of statistical system in the field of applied/official statistics.  Prof. CR Rao award has been reserved for young statistician for his/her significant work in the field of statistics.

 

2.         Applications/Nominations for the grant of the Prof.P.V. Sukhatme Award for the year 2007-2008 are now invited.

3.         Eligibility :

The applicants or statisticians nominated should

 

i)                    be Indian National & no age bar.

 

ii)                   have made significant contributions  in Applied/Official Statistics approved by                                competent Authority

 

iii)                 have acquired the degree of Ph.D/D.Sc.

 

 iv)       have made life time contributions in the Official Statistical System of India

 

4.         Amount of Award

 

The Award carries a cash prize of Rs. one lakh along with a citation.  In case the Award is given to more than one person, then the amount of award viz. Rs. one  lakh will be equally distributed among awardees.   For example, if number of awardees is more than one, then the amount will be equally distributed to all of them.  

The Awardee is entitled to travel expenses( for travel by Indian Airlines/Air India by economy class)  and free boarding and lodging for the travel/tour undertaken to receive the award. Boarding and lodging facilities for the awardee(s) may be arranged by Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MOS&PI).   However, in case boarding & lodging facilities are not arranged by MOS&PI, the awardee(s) will be entitled for reimbursement of expenditure on boarding and lodging in accordance with rates/norms  applicable to the officer of  Joint Secretary level in Govt. of India.

 

 

5.         Applications/Nominations of the eligible candidates in the prescribed proforma (given below) along with their resume/synopsis highlighting the salient features of the statistical work done by them during their life time may be sent so as to reach Additional Director General (SSD), Central  Statistical Organisation, MOS&PI West Block -8, Wing 6, R.K.
