Grant-in-Aid to institutions for promoting research studies and for organization of Seminars/Conferences/Workshops. The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is implementing “Grant-in- Aid‟ component of the scheme Capacity Development to promote research studies and seminars in the area of official statistics by way of providing financial assistance.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation instituted two national awards and one international award in statistics during the 9th Five Year Plan (1997-2002) under the plan scheme “Award and fellowship for outstanding and meritorious research work in Statistics” to encourage independent and high quality research work in the field of applied/theoretical areas significantly benefiting the Indian official statistical system in the past and/or near future.

Since 2005, every year, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) organises an all India essay writing competition on the subject relevant to Statistics/Official Statistics for the post graduate students of statistics studying in the recognised universities/colleges/institutions to commemorate the birth anniversary of eminent statistician Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis. The competition is generally held at various Zonal/Regional/Sub- Regional offices of NSO (FOD). Winners of the competition are felicitated on Statistics Day celebration held every year on 29th June and following number of prizes are given

Officers from the MoSPI are nominated to participate in various overseas Training Programmes/ Meetings/Workshops etc. keeping in view major responsibility of MoSPI relating to maintaining liaison with International Statistical bodies like UN, IMF, FAO, UNCTAD, World Bank, ILO, SAARCSTAT, BRICS, WHO etc. in different statistical matters including interchange of statistical intelligence, sharing of expertise for improving the statistical system. Training Unit handles processes related to nominations and administrative approvals.

Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is implementing a scheme for internship for post-graduate students/research scholars of recognized universities/ institutes with the objective to create awareness amongst the students about statistical system of India. Internships under the scheme are offered through various offices/internship centers across the country for duration of two month during May to July and a token stipend of ₹ 10,000/- is provided to selected students on successful completion of internship. Details of the scheme (along with eligibility criterion, selection process, terms and conditions etc.) inviting application for internship are usually posted on the web site of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation by last week of Feb or by first week of March every year.

“The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is undertaking several new activities viz., annual survey of the services sector, annual survey of the unincorporated enterprises, time use survey, development of indicators for monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Seventh Economic Census. A repository of all statistical information collected from administrative systems and surveys is proposed to be collated to streamline the data availability across sectors and Central and State Governments. The Ministry hires Young Professional (YPs) and Consultants with specific objective to augment the availability of skilled manpower to fast-track the activities.” Vacancies as and when available would be announced through Ministry’s website.
