The Administration Division, headed by a Joint Secretary and supported by Directors/Dy Secretaries, looks after the administrative and financial functions of the Ministry and reports to Additional Secretary. It also manages the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) and Subordinate Statistical Service (SSS) including their transfer, posting and career planning.
- Indian Statistical Service: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is the Cadre Controlling Authority for the Indian Statistical Service (ISS), constituted in 1961, as a cadre of qualified statisticians to meet the needs of planning, policy formulation and decision making by the Government. Presently, the ISS Officers are spread over 40 Ministries/Departments/Organizations of the Government of India.
- Subordinate Statistical Service: On the recommendations of the Fifth Central Pay Commission, the Subordinate Statistical Service (SSS) was established in 2002 as a feeder service to the Indian Statistical Service. Presently, the SSS Officers are spread over 55 Ministries/Departments/Organizations of the Government of India. The Officers of the Service are mainly engaged in activities of collection and compilation of data through various statistical surveys being conducted by this Ministry and surveys as well as administrative sources by other line Ministries.
Data Processing Cadre: Apart from statistical staff, the Ministry has large cadre of EDP staff in DPD, CSO (IS Wing) and the Computer Center. In the Computer Center, there is a cadre for Group ‘A’ level officers while in other two offices there are no Group ‘A’ posts in EDP cadre.
