1. Consumer Price Index – Urban
Consumer Price Indices (CPI) measure changes over time in general level of prices of goods and services that households acquire for the purpose of consumption. CPI numbers are widely used as a macroeconomic indicator of inflation, as a tool by governments and central banks for inflation targeting and for monitoring price stability, and as deflators in the national accounts. CPI is also used for indexing Dearness Allowance (DA) to employees for increase in prices. CPI is therefore considered as one of the most important economic indicators. The survey is conducted on behalf of CSO(PSD). The present base year for CPI (U) is 2012=100. Price data collection is done for 1078 quotations per month from 310 towns.

The price collection of CPI (U) started from May, 2008 by FOD on behalf of CSO (PSD). Since then, regular collection/transmission of monthly price in the web portal of CPI (U) is being done.
Recent Development:
CSO (PSD) is in the process of revising the base year of CPI (U) from 2012=100 to 2024=100. The market survey for revising the is expected to start from January, 2024.
2. Consumer Price Index – Rural
Consumer Price Index- Rural measure changes over time in general level of prices of goods and services that rural households acquire for the purpose of consumption.CPI(R) has also been entrusted to NSSO(FOD) from Department of Posts for 1181 villages across the country out of which 5 villages pertaining to Lakshadweep is carried out by DES. The shifting of price collection work from Department of post (DOP) to field operation Division (FOD) started from September, 18 to October, 18. FOD has taken independent charge of work from November, 2018 onwards. The regular price collection and transmission of monthly price in the web portal of CPI (U) is being done by FOD. The present base year for CPI (R) is 2012=100.

CSO(PSD) is in the process of revising the base year of CPI(R) from 2012=100 to 2024=100. The market survey for revising the is expected to start from January, 2024.
3. Rural Price Collection (RPC)
The data collected on rural retail prices are used for compiling the consumer price index (CPI) for Agricultural labourers/Rural Labourers. The Labour Bureau, Ministry of Labour, compiles and publishes the CPI for agricultural labourers. The base year for RPC is 1986=100. Data collection from 603 villages per month from 26 States is collected every month. The price collection of RPC started from 1960 by FOD on behalf of Labour Bureau, Shimla.
Recent Development:
Labour Bureau, Shimla is in the process of revising the base year of CPI(AL/RL) i.e. RPC from 1986=100 to the latest.
4. Whole Sale Price (Index)
WPI is used as a measure of inflation in some economies. WPI is used as an important measure of inflation in India. Fiscal and Monetary policy changes are greatly influenced by changes in WPI. The price collection under WPI started since 2007-08 by FOD on behalf of Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Regular collection/transmission of monthly price is being done on the web portal of WPI. The base year for WPI is 2011-12 =100, Data collection of 6775 quotations on monthly basis covering 5870 manufacturing units/factories in the organized sector.
Recent Development:
DPIIT is in the process of revising the base year of WPI from 2011-12 to 2017-18. Backlog data collection is being collected since April, 2017 for allotted quotations.
